Step 5 Train Management

Supervisors at all levels must be trained about the importance of looking at substance abuse as a health, safety, performance and productivity issue-not a drug, alcohol, gambling or other problem. Employers must never attempt to diagnose or treat an employee's potential addiction. Instead, they must recognize the signs and respond effectively.

Tips and Strategies

Comprehensive training must include:

  • An understanding of the company's substance-free policy, including the rationale of the program.

  • Details of any drug or alcohol testing procedures.

  • Tools that help supervisors explain the policy to employees, including key messages about the objective, responsibilities and consequences for non-compliance.

  • Tips that help supervisors recognize signs of substance abuse or other addictive behaviours such as gambling or eating disorders.

  • Consultation and cooperation with the substance-free workplace committee.

  • Processes for supervisors to document what they see in the workplace.

  • Steps for referring employees to confidential resources to address their potential addiction.
