Turning Knowledge into Action

Stories of reclaiming well-being at work, off work and returning to work

Working Through It™ is a series of videos designed to speak directly to people struggling with mental health issues. Real people share their experiences of working through times of mental health pressures at work, off work and returning to work, and send these important messages; 1) you are not alone, 2) there are things you can do to reclaim your well-being, and 3) there is hope for a better tomorrow. The great news is that the entire resource is available on the Great-West Life Centre for Mental Health in the Workplace website and is absolutely free. Guarding Minds @ Work: A Workplace Guide to Psychological Safety & Health is a collaboration between the Consortium for Organizational Mental Healthcare (COMH) Faculty of Health Sciences at SFU and the Great-West Life Centre for Mental Health in the Workplace in response to a growing need for employers to understand, assess and effectively address psychosocial issues affecting health or productivity in their particular workplace. In response to the question "What does your workplace do to contribute
to good mental health"
, the following points describe How Some Organizations Assist With a Mentally Healthy Workplace:

  • Employee Assistance Program - a free and confidential service providing counselling by phone and online, along with other wellness initiatives, e.g. benefit lunch and learns, etc.
  • Adopt a proactive approach by creating the conditions for mental wellbeing, rather than just promoting mental wellbeing: recognition is uppermost, reasonable workload, encouraging peer support, as well as an open-door policy to allow employees to discuss any workplace issues they are having and provide workplace accommodation upon request.
  • Benefits package includes coverage for licensed psychologist sessions, short term disability benefits for employees who require time off of work due to mental health reasons, as prescribed by a doctor.
  • Developing a wellness program based on an outside survey sent to all employees about wellness issues, with results to be compiled by the 3rd party for management to review and address. Hold 4 wellness seminars onsite each year, a monthly wellness newsletter, a quarterly leadership newsletter and a Health & Wellness Fair.
